Look up the microchip number of an animal brought in free of charge; we search our own register plus nine Dutch and fifteen international databases. If the animal is with us, we alert the owner straight away. If no owner can be found, report the animal as found, and on adoption transfer it to the new owner with a transfer code.

    Look up the microchip number

    Every animal brought in starts here. Looking up is free and needs no account. If the animal is with ChipReaders, the owner is notified immediately; if it is held elsewhere, we point you to the right database.

    Report the animal as found

    If no owner can be found, report the animal as found with a clear photo. Your report is automatically compared with open missing reports of the same species nearby, and a searching owner may recognise the photo.

    Sign up as a chip reader

    Shelters have a chip scanner. By signing up you appear on the map, so people with a found animal can come to you instead of taking the animal in themselves. That saves you intake places.

    Transfer the animal on adoption

    When an animal is adopted, create a transfer code and give it to the new owner. They use it to put the animal in their own name and manage their own details afterwards. That way an animal is never in the shelter name for long.

Why reporting a found animal helps

Many owners search online before calling a shelter. If the animal you have in stays on our list and the map, with a photo, there is a good chance the owner recognises it themselves.

On top of that, we automatically compare every found report with open missing reports of the same species nearby, and for a registered animal we look further afield.

What the network can do for you

If you appear on the map as a chip reader, someone who finds an animal can come to you first to have the microchip read. In many cases the owner is known within an hour and the animal does not need taking in at all.

For a missing animal within your radius you receive a notification, so you know what to look out for if an animal is brought to you.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost for a shelter?
Looking up microchip numbers, reporting found animals and signing up as a chip reader is free. For registrations and transfers from an organisation account we are happy to agree terms; please get in touch.
Can I give several staff members access?
At present it works with one account per organisation. If you want several users, let us know and we will look at what is possible.
What if the animal is held in another database?
That happens often. Besides our own register, our search page covers nine Dutch and fifteen international databases and points you to where the chip is known.
Do I have to report a found animal to the council?
In the Netherlands the council is legally responsible for the care of found animals. If you already work on behalf of a council, that is arranged; if you take in an animal outside that arrangement, the report still applies.
Can we handle the adoption agreement through ChipReaders?
There is an adoption agreement that can be signed digitally. Get in touch if you want to use it; we will then set it up for your organisation.
