My pet has died, do I need to deregister the microchip?

   Log in and go to the animal

   Sign in with the email address you used to register the animal. Your overview lists all your animals; choose the one concerned.

   Choose deregister, reason deceased

   On the animal there is an option to deregister it. Choose deceased as the reason. You do not have to supply proof or a statement from a vet.

   Done, nothing further is needed

   The animal moves to the archive in your account and is no longer shown as active. The reminders to check your details stop. If you want to look back later, it stays in your overview.

Why the registration stays

A microchip number is issued only once and stays linked to that one animal. If the registration disappeared entirely, the same number could later turn up on another animal and nobody could trace which animal it belonged to.

That is why the registration stays and only the status changes. Your details are no longer shown to anyone looking up the number.

Is your animal also held in another database?

In the Netherlands and Belgium several microchip databases exist side by side. If your animal was also registered elsewhere, for example by the vet or the breeder, deregister it there as well. We cannot do that for you at another organisation.

Frequently asked questions

Am I obliged to deregister the microchip?

No. There is no obligation to deregister a deceased animal. It is pleasant though: you stop receiving reminders to check your details, and your overview stays accurate.

Does it cost anything?

No, deregistering is free. Undoing a deregistration is also free, should that turn out to be necessary.

I can no longer log in, can you do it?

Yes. Contact us from the email address the animal is registered with, including the microchip number or the animal name. We will then deregister it for you.

What happens to my details?

Your details are no longer shown to anyone looking up the microchip number. The registration stays in your account. If you want to delete your account entirely, that is possible too; that is separate from deregistering an animal.

My animal was missing and was found deceased, what now?

First close the missing report so it does not stay open, then deregister the animal. If you get stuck, let us know; we will help you through it.
